6 Reasons to Take Your Kids to Copenhagen

By Chris Pavone, author of The Accident

When our kids were preschoolers, my family lived in Europe for a year and a half and traveled regularly—weekends in Paris, short-term apartments in Barcelona and Rome, skiing in the Alps, driving across Bavaria. Of all the places we visited, Copenhagen stands out as my favorite destination for kids. Here's why:

Tivoli Gardens: Opened in 1843, this is the second-oldest amusement park in the world (the oldest is also in Denmark, in nearby Klampenborg), and Tivoli was Walt Disney's inspiration for Disneyland. Unlike American amusement parks that are plunked down in suburban tracts and buffered by chain restaurants and parking lots, Tivoli's flower-filled, 20-plus acres are in the heart of downtown Copenhagen. The park is packed with great restaurants (even a couple with Michelin stars), beautiful architecture, and a remarkable attention to charming detail. This is the original Magic Kingdom.

The people: Perhaps it's different during the bleak, long Scandinavian winter, but when we were in Denmark in late spring, the entire population seemed to be smiling and saying hello. We received a warm welcoming embrace everywhere we went, which is not what you necessarily expect (or deserve?) when traveling with little kids. I can't overemphasize the transformative power of all the genuine smiles.

Hans Christian Andersen: The author of The Ugly Duckling and The Little Mermaid lived here for most of his life, and visiting Copenhagen is a great opportunity to revisit Andersen's many wonderful fairy tales. Plus, there's the statue of the Little Mermaid herself, beckoning from the bay.

Children’s clothing: The Danes are stylish about absolutely everything, and kids' clothing is no exception. You'll find the best selection in the colorful, creative boutiques that crowd the streets surrounding Strøget, which is known as Europe's longest pedestrian shopping street.

Scenic outdoor spaces: Copenhagen is home to a great zoo, charming playgrounds in beautiful parks, and an abundance of waterfront space, making for an environment so perfect that even a queen lives here.

Legoland: The original can be found in a town called Billund, where the brilliant bricks were invented. It's not exactly close—a five-hour round trip—but that includes some pretty great scenery as you drive across basically half of Denmark. And when we arrived, the kids looked around in awe. "This," one of them said, eyes wide, "this is the place for me!" He was completely right.

Chris Pavone's novel The Expats was a New York Times, USA Today, and international bestseller, and winner of Edgar and Anthony awards for best first novel. Chris grew up in Brooklyn, graduated from Cornell, and was a book editor for nearly two decades, as well as an expat in Luxembourg, but now lives again in New York City with his wife and children. The Accident is his second novel.

Insider's Guide to Balboa Island, California

fuck hot girl cute in asshole

When you're headed to Balboa Island, there's only one way to get there: the ferry. David Beek’s family has owned and operated the three-car Balboa Island Ferry for nearly 100 years, shuttling passengers to and from the resort town of Balboa Island in Newport Beach. The island is also accessible via a two-lane bridge, but a ferry ride from Balboa Peninsula into town is a can’t-miss experience. The man-made island charms visitors year-round with its quaint main street and colorful, multimillion-dollar cottages. Located near Disneyland, and a 15-minute drive from John Wayne Airport, the island offers a great family-friendly getaway for spring or summer.

For a local’s take on the best spots in town, read on to discover Beek's picks for everything from the best beachside family activities to locals’ happy hour hangout.
WHAT TO DO

Spend a day at Disneyland, then make your way to Newport Beach and Balboa Island. For family fun on the water, rent a paddleboard or kayak from Balboa Surf & Style, or take a motorboat out to tour the harbor. There are also whale-watching boat tours this spring, or Hollywood-themed cruises to view old movie stars’ seaside retreats.

On shore, visit shops and restaurants along Marine Avenue, the town’s charming main street. The two-mile Balboa Boardwalk around the island is a popular spot for dog-walkers, joggers, and visitors alike. Along the way, check out the South Bayfront Promenade, where the Balboa Island Artwalk will kick off the town’s summer season May 18. You’ll see 100 artists showcasing jewelry, paintings, blown glass, and more—plus you'll be able to enjoy live music performances throughout the day.

A ferry ride across the harbor to Balboa Pier takes you to neighboring Balboa Village, where you’ll find the Balboa Fun Zone’s Ferris wheel, arcades, and ExplorOcean nautical museum for kids, plus the Balboa Pavilion.
WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK

Tuck into a hearty breakfast at Wilma’s Patio, a family-owned, decades-old restaurant where you’ll find light omelets, eggs Benedict, and everything in between. All menu items are fresh and homemade, including the hollandaise sauce and pancake syrup. For a rowdy happy hour and stiff drinks, try the Village Inn (127 Marine Avenue, Balboa Island, 949/675-8300) for great food and nightly live entertainment. It’s the island’s only bar with a full liquor license, and still operating the same as it did back in the 1920s. For dessert, pick up a frozen chocolate-dipped banana or Balboa Bar at Dad’s Donut & Bakery Shop (318 Marine Avenue, Balboa Island, 949/673-8686). Dad’s has been a go-to spot for sweet-tooth cravings since the mid-1940s.
WHERE TO STAY

There are no hotels on Balboa Island, but try the nearby Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa orIsland Hotel. Both provide close proximity and shuttle services to Balboa Island and local landmarks, and they’re also located across the street from the luxe Fashion Island outdoor mall, a world-class shopping destination.

Incredible Private Pools at 7 Worldwide Hotels

While an infinity-edge pool that glints under the sun is fabulous, nothing beats a private pool you need not share with other hotel guests. At several resorts and hotels around the world, fromBotswana to the United Arab Emirates, a plunge pool to call your very own is set just a few feet from the bed.

1. CASA PALOPO

Near Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
jav public
Formerly a private home, boutique hotel Casa Palopo's most exclusive accommodations are in its two-story Villa Palopo. When you book the entire two-bedroom villa, the outdoor infinity-edge pool perched on the hillside—complete with a Jacuzzi and outdoor palapa (a thatched-roof, open-air dwelling) with a wood-burning fireplace—is all yours. Also yours: brightly colored stucco walls and original Guatemalan paintings, plus butler service (hello, cocktails!) and a personal chef (poolside nibbles, anyone?).

2. NAM HAI HOI AN

Central Vietnam

The Nam Hai, open since 2006, is an all-villa resort where the top-of-the-line accommodations (two- to five-bedroom villas) each boast a private infinity pool. Borrowing tips and tricks from feng shui experts—to get that chi circulating in the name of good energy—the pool is shouldered by lush plants and, back indoors, you can relax among Vietnamese lacquer and luxurious hand-spun silks. Canapés and drinks are served at your villa around 6pm daily, and a private butler is on hand, to boot.

3. JADE MOUNTAIN

Soufriere, St. Lucia

Celebrating its six-year anniversary this fall, the glam Jade Mountain puts guests up in rooms that look out onto their own private pools, measuring between 400 and 900 square feet. From the pool—each of which has a unique glass-tile color scheme, along with fiber-optic lighting for nighttime swims—is a stunning, unobstructed view of not only the Grand Pitons (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), but also the lush landscaping at the 600-acre private estate of Anse Chastanet.
4. QASR AL SARAB BY ANANTARA

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Booking a one-, two-, or three-bedroom villa—the most posh accommodations at Qasr Al Sarab—gets you a private pool overlooking the orange-red sand of the Liwa Desert, along with plenty of cabanas, an outdoor shower, and a full dining area to properly unwind and entertain. Plus, a personalized butler ensures the fridge is continually stocked with choice beverages.

5. CAPELLA PEDREGAL, CABO SAN LUCAS

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

At the tony Capella Pedregal, the overall style of the place doesn't stop at your room. All accommodations flaunt a private plunge pool, with either beachfront or ocean views. There's no excuse not to take in a sunset when there's a private pool with five-star views just outside your door.
6. UBUD HANGING GARDENS BY ORIENT EXPRESS

Bali, Indonesia

Every villa at Ubud Hanging Gardens by Orient Express has its own private terrace where the focal point is a private pool. Paired with contemporary Balinese architecture for the interior, the exterior continues the native theme with lush plants and valley views that will cause you to gawk, again and again.

7. KINGS POOL CAMP

Linyanti/Savuti region of Botswana, South Africa

Deep in the bush, experience even more of the great outdoors thanks to a private plunge pool connected to each of the nine luxurious, tented suites at Kings Pool Camp. Also just a few steps from your suite: an outdoor daybed gazebo and the view of a lagoon packed with happy hippos.

Super Bowl to Get Floating Bud Light-Themed Hotel

jav breast milk
This winter will bring many "firsts" for the NFL and Super Bowl. The biggest change is the location of this annual mega-sporting event, which will be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey's Meadowlands. And while Budweiser conjures up a special Bud Light-themed hotel in every Super Bowl city, transforming a cruise ship into a floating hotel for the event is definitely a new spin on things.

Bud Light has chartered Norwegian Cruise Line's brand-new, 18-deckNorwegian Getaway and will dock her at New York's Pier 88 from January 30 through February 2, 2014. Decorators will transform the ship into the Bud Light Hotel by way of signage, specially designed pillows and hand towels, branded key cards, and more.

Bud Light will invite 4,028 guests to stay onboard during Super Bowl weekend. And, believe it or not, the 146,600-ton cruise ship, with its 22 bars and 27 dining venues, just isn't big enough for all the parties and concerts Bud Light has planned. That's why they're also taking over the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum complex next door for a total of 300,000 square feet of event space between the floating hotel and museum.

Yes, it will be mid-winter in frigid New York City, but Bud Light's solved that problem, too. Team event planners are constructing heated venues for the scheduled weekend activities that will include Madden Bowl XX (an annual video game tournament) and concerts sponsored by Pandora and Pepsi (concert headliners will be announced soon).

If you want a chance to visit the Bud Light Hotel during Super Bowl XLVIII, watch for contests sponsored by the beer company; all other berths are reserved for Bud Light partners and VIP guests. If you don't get to stay at the Bud Light Hotel, consider sailing aboard the new Norwegian Getaway this winter from Miami, where she'll offer seven-night voyages to the Eastern Caribbean.
